Eric

There is no evidence. Someone just posted this spurious claim somewhere on the Internet and others have simply copied it and repeated it without questioning the source.

What we do know is that the John Hilton of New Kent County is likely the John Hilton who signed a labor indenture in Bristol in 1674 and who was then transported to Virginia. Bristol was a major point of departure for endentured servants and only a small number of those who left for America from Bristol were actually born there.

My hunch is that someone found this out, and not understanding what a labor indenture was, incorrectly assumed that this document represented the indenture of a young boy into an apprenticeship. I suspect that the birth date of 1665 was selected based on a notion that apprentices were about 9 years old when they started. Because the document was signed in Bristol, this same uninformed person assumed that John Hilton must be from there.

I have written about this more extensively elsewhere. To find my previous writings, do a google search on "John Hilton" "New Kent" "gordon Hylton"

I now believe that John Hilton was most likely from Wales or that part of Lancashire that borders of Wales. This would be consistent with stories repeated over and over again by his Virginia descendants.

Gordon Hylton
