Eric. You have posted this claim before, but, as before, you have provided no actual evidence that the John Hilton who appeared in New Kent County Virginia in the late 17th century was John Hilton of Warcop. Obviously both men were named John Hilton, and both were born in Britain in the 17th century, but that hardly establishes that they were one and the same. As you of all people know, the name John Hilton was a common one. There is a long standing belief among the descendents of John Hilton of New Kent County who still live in Virginia that the family came from Wales. Although this claim is lacking in details, and often it is the grandsons of John Hilton rather than John Hilton himself that are cited as Welsh natives, oral history techniques tell us that the story should not be discounted, particularly since it seems unlikely that 18th or 19th century Virginians would make up a story about the family being from Wales when the name seems very un-Welsh. There were of course Welsh Hiltons, generally assumed to be descendants of the Viking settlers who established communities on the north coast of Wales. It seems most likely that "our" John Hilton was born in Wales, or possibly in Lancashire, where many of the Welsh Hilton relocated. You yourself have written about this branch of the family. You have done extraordinarily impressive work on the Hylton/Hilton/Helton family, and we Hyltons are greatly in your debt. However, I believe that you are mistaken on this particular point. Certainly, if you have evidence linking the John Hilton of Warcop to the John Hilton of New Kent County, please show it to us. Prof. J.
