Joel Hokkanen was raised by his grandparents, Abraham and Lisa Huhtala on the Huhtala farm - even after his mother's eventual marriage to Elias Lahtinen, he still lived with his grandparents. It is said that his father was a family member.
Joel worked the wire mills in Waukegan, opened a general store in Waukegan, moved to Minnesota in 1909 and farmed and sold insurance for Lutheran Brotherhood (now Thrivent Financial), moved to Minneapolis in 1937 and was a full-time insurance agent and in real estate.
