Ann or Nancy Who?

In the 1914 obituary for Samuel Wallace McGuire, born Oct. 27, 1826, at West Liberty, Kentucky, it was written: that he was the “son of Samuel McGuire and Jeannette Ferguson, both of whom were born in Bryant’s Station, Kentucky. He was grand-nephew of Robert Burns the Scottish poet”.

Disregarding for the time being, the yet unproven (to my knowledge) place of birth mentioned above for SW, there is still much discussion, that will likely never have a well documented outcome, as to whether the maiden name of his grandmother, Ann or Nancy who married the RW pensioner John McGuire born 1756 in Ireland, was BURNS, HOLDER, HOLDEN or another name that has never made print or the internet.

Given that Burns, the poet, lived from 1759 to 1796 I would entertain theories for the Burns connection. Even a good solid theory for a Burns not related as stated would be a good thing. Another possible outcome, which would do nothing to advance the cause of naming Nancy, is that the relationship could have been on his mother’s side.

Strong arguments for any other maiden names for Ann or Nancy will also be entertained. Anyone mentioning “Eric Passmore White” or “Harlan Brown” need only supply the documentation that accompanies their works to be in the final running for the grand prize.
