John Holland was the progenitor of the Holland families who originated in Nansemond County, Virginia. His date of birth and death are not known He was born in England and was one of 50 people whose passages to Virginia were paid by Lt. Colonel Jonathan Blake and Edward Ison. Blake and Ison were granted 2500 acres of land February 20, 1664 in Nansemond County, Virginia under the headright system (50 acres per passenger) for transporting the 50 people.

The last record on John was the 1704 Nansemond County Quit Rent Tax Rolls. A book written in 1963 and copied by a woman in 1988 shows John’s birth as 1628 based on the fact the 1704 Quit Rent Roll showed him as “being 76 years old when the roll was made“. Like most of the information written by those two individuals about Gabriel and John, their statement about John’s date of birth is false. The 1704 Virginia Quit Rent Tax Rolls listed only the name of the person, county of residence and number of acres owned by the individual.

I might add that the same two persons mentioned as writing that John was born in 1628 also wrote he was the person who was granted the 2500 acres in Nansemond County.

Nansemond County, Virginia is known as a burnt County because of the destruction of county records. The first occurred in April 1734 , when a fire at the home of the county clerk destroyed most of the records stored there. Some deeds and wills were rerecorded, but the records again were destroyed when British infantry burned the entire town of Suffolk, including the clerk's office, on 13 May 1779. What survived this disaster faced a fire of unknown origin which swept through the clerk's office on 7 Feb. 1866. The remaining few records are now housed with those of the City of Suffolk

Because of the destruction of the records, based on circumstantial evidence using Isle of Wight County deeds, it appeared John had four sons, Henry, James, Joseph and John Jr.

I wrote the findings of my research on Gabriel and John Holland in 2007. I think you will find it interesting. I am sending it direct to you. Best regards

Wiley Holland
