Many of us know that most Irish Census material was burned in the Customs House fire of 1921. Well, God bless those who filed for old-age pensions before the fire, and referenced old Census information on their government applications in order to prove their age!
A wonderful book titled 1841/1851 CENSUS ABSTRACTS (NORTHERN IRELAND) compiled by Josephine Masterson has listings from the Census, as preserved in old-age pension files. Here I found our Richard Hopps, previously a mystery man, with his family, from the 1851 Census:
Location: Armagh/Oneilland West/Kilmore/(Shankill?) Legaghory
LDS Film 0993092
RICHARD HOPPS, head, age not given, married 1834
REBECCA HOPPS, wife, age not given, married 1834
ELIZABETH HOPPS, daughter, age 16
HANNAH HOPPS, daughter, age 14
ANNE HOPPS, daughter, age 12
MARY JANE HOPPS, daughter, age 11
REBECCA HOPPS, daughter, age 9
RICHARD HOPPS, son, age 7
ISABELLA HOPPS, daughter, age 5
MARGARET HOPPS, daughter, age 3
WILLIAM JOHN HOPPS, son, age 1
This Census also showed members of the family who died between Censuses, and with this family is:
ISABELLA HOPPS, daughter, d. 1845, age 4.
Still hoping to hear from other Hopps family, if you are out there.
