Thelma, I am obviously not Hughes Williams, but I have been following some of the threads on the Horton's of Elbert County, GA and have noted the two of you have a considerable amount of information on these families which is the reason for this post. I descend from Sarah Horton [b.9 Oct 1812 in GA] and married William Tollet Maxwell 30 Sept 1830. I have noted the only Horton's in Elbert Co., GA during the period of Sarah's childhood were: Thomas Horton m. Elizabeth Teasley; James Horton m. Rebecca, Thomas Horton Sr. m. Elizabeth Walker, John Horton m. Winnifred Teasley, Jeremiah Horton m. Frances Colbert, and William Horton m. Jane Crawford. For a number of reasons, I suspect my Sarah (Horton) Maxwell may have been the daughter of William Horton and Jane Crawford. 1. All of the Horton males with the exceptions of William and Jeremiah named a daughter Sarah 2. William Horton has 5 daughters under 10 on the 1820 census and 1 daughter 10 - 16 and posted genealogies only account for two of the daughters under 10 - Nancy Ann and Jane J. My Sarah would have been 8 at this time. 3. The 1830 census, William has 2 females 15 to 20. Jane H. is only 14 and is likely the daughter 10 - 15. Nancy would be one of the 2 females and the other is unknown. 4. I have ruled out Thomas Horton and Elizabeth Teasley as they were married in 1817 and my Sarah was 5 years at this time. 5. I ruled out James as his daughter Sarah appears to have been born 19 Jan. 1811, the year before my Sarah and there does not appear to be a good reason for him to have named a second born daughter Sarah. However, marriage records do indicate this Sarah married Benjamin King Tabor the same day as my Sarah married William Tollet Maxwell. 6. I have also ruled out Thomas Horton Sr. and Elizabeth Walker as they have no younger daughter on the 1820 census. 7. On the 1840 Census, William Tollet Maxwell, Jeremiah Horton [s/o William Horton ?], William Horton, Abraham Brown and Adam(s) Brown are all on the same census page. Adam(s) Brown is the brother of John Willis Brown whose son, Strother Gaines Brown married Sarah Emily Maxwell [d/o William Tollet Maxwell and Sarah Horton]. Adam(s) is living right next door to William Horton. William Maxwell is living 8 houses away from William Horton and 4 houses away from Jeremiah Horton. 8. My direct family lines are Collins, Clark, Brown, Gaines, Maxwell, Adams, Pemberton, Taliaferro, Alexander and many of the allied lines of my direct family are also connected to the Hortons - eg. Teasley, Christian, and Walker. I have just submitted an mt-DNA test on behalf of my female line and it is important for me to try to go back as far as possible with the family.
