Caleb Albert Howle - Modoc SC

I am the daughter of Lany Albert Howle, grandaughter of Caleb Albert Howle. We know ABSOLUTELY nothing on our families history. My grandfather was married to Marie Leola Walker breifly, her story is (was) that he 'abandoned' her and my father. When I was 13 years old (1978) we found out he was still living, and in Modoc SC. We looked him up and was able to have him in our lives for a very short time before he was killed by a tree falling on his head. (he was a lumberjack) We found out from him that he did not abandon my grandmother and dad, when he returned from doing his duty in Service, my grandmother had 're-married', and he thought it was best not to interfere in the family. We did meet his sister Sara and her husband, Ralph - I believe their last name was 'Smalley', of Modoc SC.
We also found out that he had a brother named Clarence Howle(deceased), his wife's name is Ruby.
My grandfather never remarried and as far as we know, never fathered anymore children. I don't believe that Clarence and Ruby had any children either. My father took back his right last name, when he discovered it at age 16 (the first time he ever saw his birth certificate).
He and my mother, Barbara Geraldine Lindsey Howle, had 4 daughters. So as far as we know, this is the end of our family name.
We would really like any information on the history of our family, especially since this is the end of the line.
Any help, information, or direction on how to "begin" to even look would be GREATLY appreciated! Thank you!
