Samuel HAMILTON and John ROBB owned 1200 acres before the county was
organized. WIlliam ROBB purchased in 1810 a tract of 260 acres from Samuel or
Robert RIDDLE, with the cabin thereon. RIDDLE had made a small clearing some
years before, and Samuel RIDDLE resided there prior to its sale. John MOSER,
Sr., a Revolutionary soldier, and son John, a single man, had some interests
here even before the establishment of the county in 1800, and, it is said,
they were here as early as 1797-98. William HUTCHISON and his brothers,
George and Alexander, came before the close of the century and took a leading
part in civil and Military affairs.

History of Butler County Pennsylvania - 1883
Chapter 34 -- Oakland Township

NORTH BUTLER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

This church received its name from the fact that when it was constituted it
was in the northern part of Butler Township, but after the re-districting of
the county it was placed in Oakland Township. Long before any church building
was erected, people assembled at stated times for public worship at the house
of Fergus HUTCHISON. During the summer months services were conducted in his
barn. In the year 1846, according to the urgent request of some eleven or
twelve persons who had been brought up in the Presbyterian faith, the
Presbytery appointed a committee, composed of Revs. COULTER, John MUNSON and
either R.B. WALKER or Reed BRACKEN, to organize a congregation and constitute
a church. The organization took place at the residence of Fergus HUTCHISON.

The original members of the church were Samuel JACK and his wife, Mr. and
Mrs. Joseph THORN, Mr. and Mrs. John RUSSELL, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson M. CALL,
Isaac ROBB and wife, and Mrs. William NEYMAN. This infant church was
constituted a branch of Concord Presbyterian Church and remained so until
1848, when a frame building was raised on a lot purchased from Mr. HUTCHISON,
in about the center of the township. It was burned down before it was
entirely completed. It was replaced by another frame structure one year
later, built on the original foundation. The present house was reared in
1881. When the first edifice was erected and completed, Rev. John COULTER
preached the dedicatory sermon. Until the year 1849 the congregation was
supplied by Presbytery, and in the same year Rev. John V. MILLER was ordained
and installed. He continued pastor of this congregation for at least ten
years, when he abandoned his charge and accepted a call from Lawrenceburg,
this county. Rev. James COULTER then was appointed stated supply, and acted
in this capacity up till 1867, as nearly as can be determined, when Rev.
James MARSHALL, the present minister, was installed. The original members of
session were Samuel JACK, Joseph THORN and Isaac ROBB. The Trustees were
Fergus HUTCHISON, Joseph THORN and John RUSSELL. The present members of
Session are John L. NEYMAN, Archie MCJUNKIN, Isaac ROBB and Christy ROBB. The
present Trustees are Henry NEYMAN, John ROBB and W.J. HUTCHISON. A Sunday
school consisting of seventy-five members is connected with this
congregation.

The first graves on the plot of ground now known as the North Butler
Cemetery were those of William Hutchison and his wife Margaret who died in
1814 and 1815 respectively. They were the parents of several children
including Forgus Hutchison. That occured 60 years before a charter was
granted to the church for a public burying ground This must have been the
private Hutchison Family plot.

On April 29, 1874, a petition was granted by the Common Pleas Court of
Butler County to establish and maintain a public cemetery on the land now
owned by the Trustees of the North Butler Presbyterian Church. The trustees
were in charge of the cemetery untill October 3, 1919, when, desiring that
they may be incorporated by law, they presented a re-petition to the court
for a charter. The corporation was named The North Butler Cemetery
Association of Oakland Township.

Notes for MARY ELVIRA HUTCHISON:
Black Hawk Courier 1-15; Snowden baby girl, 5th birth, b. 11-17-1880, to John E. Snowden
b. PA and Mary E. Germ, b. PA; He is listed as being a druggist.

After the death of her husband, Mary and her children were put on a train headed for Pittsburgh. She returned to Butler County, where she was born. The older boys William and John were sent to live and work on local farms from dawn to dusk. John was sent to the Sahli family's farm when he was 11 years old, about 1886, I don't know what farm William was sent to. Ann, Alfred and Carrie stayed with their mother. Most of their possessions must have been left behind in Iowa, however, they did manage to keep the portraits of John Maugridge Snowden, John Moor Snowden and Elizabeth Elliott Snowden. I now have the portraits, they were given to me by my father Donald L. Snowden in July 1999. He could not remember where he got them but it must have been from his father, John E. (III) Snowden.
In the 1900 US Census Forward Twp. Butler Co. ED 74 Sup. Dist. 19 Sheet 8B, Mary is found with her son William H. Snowden b. Nov. 1869, Occupation Oil Well Pumper. She gives her birth as Dec. 1850 but she was most likely born in Dec 1848. She is widowed with 8 children 5 still living. Also listed were Alfred B. Snowden b. Mar 1881 Oil Well Pumper and Carrie E. Snowden b. Nov 1883.

Notes for JOHN ELLIOTT (I) SNOWDEN:
In the 1850 Census John is listed with his father as a Printer. His father moved to Oregon, Ogle Co., Ill. in about 1855. John may have gone along, or he may have stayed behind in Allegheny County. In the 1860 Census he was listed on pg. 76, 1st Ward Pittsburgh. 11th June 1860. His occupation is listed as carpenter, age 27. He was living at the Hotel of Frances Nicholson. He married Mary Hutchison in Pa., because William H. Snowden, their oldest child was born in Pa. in 1869. The 1870 Census lists him as a 37 year old builder, with wife Mary 22 and son William H. Snowden age 11/12. It says that William was born in the month of July. The census was taken 10th June 1870 and their location is the 2nd Ward City of Allegheny City.

The Courier Waterloo Iowa Wednesday June 13, 1883.

Obituary.- The news of the death of John Snowden, which occurred about midnight Monday night last, will be a Surprise to many of our citizens. He was sick but a short time, being first confined to his house on Thursday last. The premonitory symptoms of pneumonia, which finally resulted fatally, have, however, been noticeable for sometime past, and he was troubled with severe coughing spells for some days before he was taken down. The cause of his death was double pneumonia, both lungs being affected. Deceased was reared in Pittsburg. Pa., and came to Waterloo about ten years. He would have been 51 years old in August next. He was married fourteen years ago, and was the father of eight children, three of whom, with his wife survive him. The funeral will be held from the house, at 3 o'clock this afternoon. Rev. R. Garton officiating. Deceased was well and favorably known to our citizens as a gentleman of probity, one who was always genial and pleasant and who made a friend of all who knew him.

( It should read five children and his wife survive him, not three)

Donald L. Snowden told me that Mary E. Hutchinson Snowden had bad feelings for the Snowdens that stayed in Iowa when she returned to Butler County. This seems to explain why. They seem to have taken their older brothers property. Donald Snowden took these notes on a trip to Waterloo in the 1980s.
