Richard I(j)ams' descendants

Hi all,

I have a couple of questions to pose, regarding Richard Ijams, b. ca. 1670, son of William the immigrant -- hope I don't ruffle any feathers, but I don't want to take anything for granted.

First: Richard supposedly m. (1) Ann Cheyney, and (2) Elizabeth Gaither. The Cheyney marriage seems fairly well documented, but on what basis do we know that Richard even married a woman named Elizabeth Gaither? It says so in Newman, but what are the primary records he got the information from? I don't know about anyone else, but most of what I have on the I(j)ams family is from secondary sources. We know that Newman goofed on Elizabeth's parents -- even if she was a Gaither, she wasn't the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Duvall) Gaither because the dates don't work. On what evidence do we believe that she was a Gaither at all?

Second, regarding Richard's son John, my direct ancestor: what is known about him, again from primary sources? I've seen people give him a birthdate of 1708 and identify him as the son of Richard's first wife, Ann Cheyney; Newman says he was born in 1720 and was the child of the second wife, Elizabeth (Gaither?). Some sources say John's wife was Elizabeth _____; but I'm finding an increasing number of (uncited) online sources which say his wife's name was Penelope. No one seems to know where this information is to be found in the records.

Third, what is known for certain about John's children? I descend from Richard b. ca. 1745 who married Elizabeth Pottenger; from there on down, the line is pretty well documented. How do we know that Richard was John's son? I've seen lineages (again, undocumented) that say that Richard m. Elizabeth Pottenger came from the line of William Jr. who m. Elizabeth Plummer. Again, no one seems to know what original records this comes from, nor which lineage is correct.

One side note: another I(j)ams who seems to have multiple ancestry is William I(j)ams b. ca. 1753 who m. Mary Gill Hampton, and settled in Washington Co. PA. Does anyone know how he fits in?

If anyone has done primary research on this family, I'd love to hear from you! I'm delighted to share what I have with anyone who is interested.

(Note: I'm also going to post this on the Ijams GenForum; if you respond, don't feel that you have to respond in both places. :-) )

cheers,

Gordon Bonnet
