There is a connection no doubt but who knows how far back. The Ibbitsons of Nova Scotia have been traced back to the towns of Helmsley and Hawnby Yorkshire in the 1600s. The records of those days use several variations of the spelling including Ibbotson, but there were Ibbitsons/Ibbotsons elsewhere in Yorkshire too. By the time the families settled in Canada they had also settled on the spelling; there seems to be no connection here between the Ontario Ibbotsons and NS Ibbitsons (although some NS Ibbitsons moved to Ontario to confuse matters). The name is of Danish origin, dating back to the viking days abt 1000 AD - we probably connect somewhere in there!
