Hi Susan, I realise that your message was posted over 3 years ago, but I have just begun researching my family tree. My great grandmother on my mother's side was Ruth Ibbotson. She was born in Cawthorne in 1878. I have just looked at the census returns for 1881 and 1891 and found the following, which seem to tie in with your research regarding George Ibbotson (1812 - 1885). In 1881, Ruth was living with her grandparents George Ibbotson (born 1813) and Ann (born 1815), also in the house (address Town Street, Cawthorne) were their son George (born 1853) and daughter Mary (born 1855). I surmise that Mary was the (presumably unmarried) mother of Ruth because in the 1891 census, when George and Ann (if they are the same as your ancesters) had died, George junior (aged 41) is the head of the household, single and Ruth (then aged 13) is there and is described as his niece. I have yet to receive Ruth's birth certificate, but hope that it will show more details regarding her parents! Family tales tell me that Ruth went into service in Cannon Hall, she then married my great grandfather Hanson Mitchell in 1903 (in Huddersfield) and my grandfather Henry (Harry)Mitchell was born in 1906, his brother Horace was born about 10 years later. I hope that this information is of interest to you. Jo Sargent Notify Administrator about this message?
