From Chicago Daily Democrat - August 25, 1860:
There are some magnificent farms in this State, and among the number is the one cultivated by Mr. Harvey Wilson, at Elkhorn Grove in Carroll county. He was 640 acres, of which 600, including the orchard, are under cultivation. This season, off of 185 acres, he expects to realize 4500 bushels of wheat; 200 acres of corn will average him 50 bushels to the acre; 100 acres of hay land yielding three tons to the acre, and 100 acres of oats and other grain, realizing about 85 bushels to the acre. He has raised this harvest some China Oats, yielding eigthty-four bushels to the acre, and weighing fifty-two pounds to the bushel. An excellent kind of oats, which our farmers will do well to cultivate.
The orchard, Mr. Wilson thinks, will yield him 500 bushels of apples, besides other fruits. Who would not be a farmer, if he owned such a farm?
