Thank you for your response. I posted the original query over 8 years ago, and have since gotten the answer I was looking for.
Mary J. Davis is also known as "May Primm". Her biological parents were John Davis and Sina (or SInia) Allen. Sina Allen Davis remarried someone by the name of John Primm, which is where I found Mary J. Davis's son, Alfred Simonton, in the 1870 census.
I have no other information on John Davis or his ancestry.
As it turns out, Mary J. Davis was the first wife to my ancestor, John Higgins Simonton. After researching various sources, and obtaining his death certificate, I concluded that Alfred Simonton never married and died childless, so this family line has terminated. I am descended from John H. Simonton's second wife, Amanda Wakley (or Wakely).
