My name is Jerry Heis and I am trying to help my wife trace her Craig family. Her grandfather was James Henry Craig b. April 13, 1889. His father was J.F. Craig. I'll tell you what facts we have and the speculation. Maybe you can supply some details that will mesh.

Your posting sparked some debate about the things we know for sure. J.F. was a mysterious figure in my wifes family. We're not 100% sure J.F. was James F. We do know that J.F. was James Henry Craig's father. We have the cemetery records. We also don't know for sure who the mother was.

One cousin says James Henry's mother was possibly a Mary Calvert who was born in north central Alabama maybe Decatur or Cullman AL. J.F. had two sons James Henry and W. Ben. Then we don't know what happened to their mother (Mary Calvert?). J. F. then married Nancy Brake b. 1870 and they had two children, a girl, Willie Estella b.1895 and a boy, Joseph Marion b. 1896. Then Nancy Brake died in 1898.

The Brake family took in the children of Nancy, Estella and Joseph Marion and raised them but left the older boys James Henry and Ben to fend for themselves. The mining community of Brookside AL is where they were raised by neighbors. We don't even have any speculation about what happened to J.F. or what year it was he died. He is buried in Bivens Chapel Cemetery

Brookside AL in an unmarked grave. Nancy Elizabeth Brake is also in Bivens Cemetery in a Brake family plot listed as the wife of J. F. Craig. Joseph Marion is also in Bivens Cemetery. Ben the youngest boy lived most of his life and died in WayCross GA.in 1964.

When I made the post you read, I erroneously said it was J.F. and James Henry who had gone to Herrin Ill. to work in the mines. Actually it was James Henry Craig B. 1889 and his son Paul James Craig b. 1911 who were in Herrin Ill. to work in the mines. This would have been in the
early-to-mid 1920's. They were back in Brookside Ala. before the mid 1930's

The cousin who told us the name Mary Calvert also said J.F. had told his father (one of James Henry's sons) that J.F. was born in Tennessee.

How they got the inspiration to go from Brookside AL to Herrin Ill. is a mystery. It could be J.F. had kin that migrated there because of the mining. They were all coal miners.

That is about all the info. we have, if anything meshes with your James Craig in Herrin Ill.

please let us know.

Thanks:
Jerry Heis
