Hi Peter,

It certainly looks very possible / probable but I hate to jump to conclusions! I have posted a message on the Cumberland family history site - maybe someone has access to parish records and can confirm Alexander's parentage, although from our deductions I think William and Ann are quite likely. If your assumption is correct it would mean that his children were named thus: Peter (after wife's father), Jane (after his Gran), Margaret (after own wife), Robert (after his Grandad), Janet (after wife's mother), then Ann, then William.

I'll let you know if I get any response.
