Uncle GEORGE WOODBURY, one of the best known and most popular residents of Leon and the whole county, died at his room at the Park Hotel in this city Monday at noon. He had been in rather feeble health for several years, but his last illness was only of about two weeks' duration. For a number of years he had made his home in this city at the home of his sister, MRS. J.L. YOUNG, who is spending the winter in Washington with her husband. The funeral was held from the residence of Major J.L. Young, yesterday at l2:30, conducted by Rev. Allen Judd, of Des Moines, the body being taken to Garden Grove on the afternoon train for interment by the side of his wife who died a number of years ago, the services at Garden Grove being in charge of the Masonic Lodge, of which he had been a worthy member for many years. We are unable to obtain the date for an obituary this week owing to the absence of relatives, but hope to have it for next week.

One of the pioneer settlers and most respected citizens of Decatur County, died at Leon, Iowa, March l4, l904, at the age of 7l years, 7 months and 2l days.

"Uncle" GEORGE WOODBURY as everyone called him, was one of the sterling men who helped to make the history of Decatur County. He was born on July 23, l832, in Tompkins County, New York, his father being a farmer. With his parents, Uncle GEORGE moved to Adrian, Mich., where in l849 he engaged in the drug business, in which he continued until he came to Decatur County in l854, locating at Garden Grove, where he established a drug store which continued in his name for more than forty years. In l86l he was elected as sheriff on the democratic ticket and served four years, making one of the best sheriffs this county has ever had. Both as a public official and a private citizen he was a man of exemplary character, and in his death the community sustains a public loss.

The deceased was married at White Pidgeon, Mich., on Oct. 4, l948, to MISS KATE M. JACOBUS, who died a number of years ago. To them were born two sons, both of whom have passed to the Great Beyond. Their married life was one continual honeymoon, there being no happier family in the whole county.

For a number of years, Uncle GEORGE made his home in Leon with his only sister, MRS. J.L. YOUNG, and many were the pleasant hours which he passed with old friends and acquaintances. His death is regretted by all and his memory will be cherished.

The funeral services were held in this city on Wednesday, March l7th, conducted by Rev. Allan Judd, of Des Moines at the home of Major J.L. Young, after which his remains were taken to Garden Grove for interment by the side of his wife in the Garden Grove Cemetery. He had been a member of the Masonic Lodge for many years, and the final rites were in charge of this order.
