Morwenna,

Unfortunately it looks as though we know as much as each other. The family seem slightly elusive and not a lot of records exist. I think the Militia were up here protecting Edinburgh Castle and guarding prisoners of the Napoleonic war held there. Records on the North York Militia are kept at the National Archives at Kew but without having an idea of which part of Yorkshire he came from, I think a search there would be very lengthy. Well, if I ever make progress, I'll contact you - and hopefully vice versa? Best of luck with your research.
