Hi Alexis, Thank you for posting your message. I don’t have any information to help you, but I’m hoping you might be able to help us figure something out. My cousins and I have heard over the years of a distant family connection to Mary Jemison, but we haven’t been able to learn much about it. A cousin shared some notes she had on the obituary of Jane McShea of Greece (Monroe County), NY. I’m not sure when Jane McShea died, but the obituary said she was born in 1851. It said she was the daughter of Jane Jemison and John McShea, and that she was a descendant of Mary Jemison through her mother. It also said that she was the great granddaughter of Moses Cochrane, the first settler of Carthage (now part of Rochester). Moses Cochrane died in 1834, and he is buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Rochester. Information about the Cochrane family that was passed down to me states that Moses Cochrane’s daughter Margaret married a Jemison. Unfortunately, I don’t have any documentation about this, and I don’t know the first name of the Jemison she married. I suspect, however, that Margaret was the mother of Jane Jemsion, and the grandmother of Jane McShea. Our ancestor was one of Margaret Cochrane Jemison’s brothers. Do you have any information about a Cochrane connection to Mary Jemison’s family? Thanks for any help you might be able to give us. Have a great semester at Geneseo!
