I am trying to fill in information on some of the descendants of Joseph Bridge, Jr., born May 19, 1780 in Northfield, Franklin Co., MA and died September 12, 1835 in Northampton, Hampshire Co., MA according to Bridge, William Dawson., 1924, where he is listed as number 48 in the "Genealogy of the John Bridge Family in America, 1632-1924", pages 155-156. He married Fanny Lathan, daughter of Joseph Latham and Judith Wells; and they had 12 children. Bridge (1923, page 155) says of their fourth child: “Lucy, b. Feb. 18, 1812; d. Feb. 1880; m. May 10 1842, Lyman Johnson, of Westfield [Mass.].” I'm somewhat confused by the records for Lyman Johnson and his wife Lucy Bridge. There appears to be at least two families with these names in Massachusetts in this time period I believe this is the correct one, but there still could be some composite records or misinformation. Listed in the 1850 (Sept. 19) U.S. Census for Westfield, Hampden Co., MA. (HOTEL is written vertically on the left side of this census entry) Lyman Johnson, age 48, b. MA, Inn Keeper Lucy Johnson, age 24, b. MA age miss indexed, original = 34, really 38 years old Mary E. Johnson, age 22, b. MA relationship/mother? Susan Johnson, age 15, b. MA relationship/mother ? Joseph Johnson, age 11, b. MA relationship/mother? Welles Johnson, age 7, b. MA = Wells Eli Phelps, age 51 -- Bar Keeper Judith Bridge, age 37, b. MA age really 40 years old Melissa Bridge, age 54, b. MA = Millicent, age miss indexed, original = 34, really 36 years old John Godand, age 47, labor If Lucy really married Lyman John in 1842, he would have been 40 years old. Lucy could have been his second wife; which would mean Mary, Susan and Joseph would have been the children of wife number one, unknown. And Lucy would be the mother of Wells, born about 1843. NOTE: Wells is a family name on the Bridge side. Listed in the 1860 (June 19) U.S. Census for Westfield, Hampden Co., MA. Lyman Johnson, age 57, b. MA, farmer Lucy Johnson, age 44, b. MA Joseph Johnson, age 21, b. MA, teamster Wells Johnson, age 16, b. MA Melissa Bridge, age 42, b. MA = Millicent, relationship are not specified in 1860, but should be sister-in-law Listed in the 1870 (June 25) U.S. Census for Westfield, Hampden Co., MA. Lyman Johnson, NOT listed, assume that he had died, between 1860 and 1870. Lucy Johnson, age 56, b. MA Head of the household, age should be 58 years old Wells Johnson, age 26, b. MA, banker or baker Ellen Johnson, age 23, b. VT, dressmaker [could be the wife of Wells ??] Maliga Bridge, age 52, b. MA no occupation = Millicent, age should be 56 years old Caroline Bridge, age 58, b. MA no occupation, age should be 61 years old NOTE: Judith, Millicent and Caroline Bridge are all sisters of Lucy Bridge. ---------------------------------------------------------- The "other" Lyman Johnson family is represented in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 US census record for Washington, Berkshire Co., MA, Lyman, age 48, 58 and 68 Lucy, age 40, 49, and 59 Children: Harriet C., born about 1843, Jane Lucy born about 1852, and George Lyman born about 1855. Rootsweb.com (World Connect) has more information on this family. Lyman was born Dec. 15, 1811, and Lucy Sophia Churchill was born Sept. 5, 1820, and their marriage date is reported as Sept. 16 1849. While the above information seems to fit together well, there is much more speculation and guess work then I am happy with, and it leaves many open questions. It would be wonderful to have this family structure, confirmed with some other records and information David Bridge Alexandria, Va BridgeDavid at earthink dot net Notify Administrator about this message?
