The first three generations of this lineage have been brought to light by the painstaking researches of Mr. Hugh B. Johnston, Jr., of Wilson N. Carolina, and have been meticulously documented. The family is thought to be descended from Johnstons of Annandale, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. JAMES JOHNSTON Of Currowaugh, in Nansemond and Isle of Wight Counties, Va., pershaps the son of an early colonial settler in Nansemond County (of which the oldest records have unfortunately been destroyed), b ca 1662, m ante 1690, Mary (b ca 1670; d post 1747), dau of Robert Johnson, of the Lower Parish of Isle of Wight County, planter, by his wife Katherine, and d in Isle of Wight County 1747 (will dated 30 Jan 1745/6, pr 11 June 1747), leaving issue with five other sons and five daus, a 2nd son, JOHN JOHNSTON Of Black Creek, Southampton County, Virginia, b in Isle of Wight County ca 1696, m 1st, --, and had issue. He m 2ndly, Peninah -- (d 12799), and d. Southampton County (which had been formed out of the southern part of Isle of Wight County 1752) 1783 (will dated 30 Jan, pr 8 May), having by her had issue. His eldest son (by his 1st marriage), JOHN JOHNSSN Settled in Franklin County, N Carolina ca 1767, hatter, b in Isle of Wight County ca 1724, m 1st 1786, Ann (b in Southampton County, Virginia 14 Sept 1763; d in Oglethorpe County, Georgia 5 Jan 1815), dau of Samuel Eley, of Franklin County, N Carolina, by his wife Mary Hillsman, and had issue, five sons and three daus. He m 2ndly in Green County, Georgia 24 May 1823, Joicy, widow of William Fears, of Green County, and dau of --Griffin, and d in Oglethorpe County, Georgia 14 Feb 1828 (will dated 28 Jan, pr March). His 3rd son (by his 1st marriage), JESSE JOHNSON Of Henry County, Georgia, later of Randolph County, Alabama, and finally of Caldwell County, Texas, Sheriff of Henry County 1822-31, Justice of the Peace and Judge of the Inferior Court of Henry County 1833-37, b in Oglethorpe County, Georgia 28 april 1795, m 14 Nov 1817, Lucy Webb (b in Green County, Georgia 14 Jan 1798; d in Texas 3 March 1857), dau of Leonard Barnett, by his wife Nancy Statham, and d at Lockhart, Texas 15 May 1856, leaving issue with four other sons and five daus, a yst son, SAMUEL EALY JOHNSON Cattle rancher in partnership with his brother Jesse thomas (Tom) Johnson, established Johnson's ranch on the Pedernales River, nr the present Johnson City (which was named after them) ca 1888, served in the Civil War as private in Company B, Col DeBray's Regt, CSA, and was present at the Battles of Galveston and Pleasent Hill, b Randolph County, Alabama 12 Nov 1838, m at Lockhart, Texas 11 Dec 1867, Eliza (b 24 June 1849; d 30 Jan 1917), dau of Lieut Robert Desha Bunton, by his wife Jane McIntosh, and d at Stonwall, Texas 25 Feb 1915, leaving with other issue, SAMUEL EARLY JOHNSON, JR. Of Johnson City, Texas, politician, lawyer, farmer and real estate dealer, mem Texas House of Representatives 1904-04 and 1917-25, b at Buda, Hays County, Texas 11 Oct 1877, m at Fredericksburg, Texas 20 Aug 1907, Rebekah (b at McKinney, Texas 26 June 1881; d at Austin, Texas 12 Sept 1958), dau of Capt Joseph Wilson Baines, of Blanco, Texas, by his wife Ruth Ament Huffman, and d at Austin, Texas 23 Oct 1937, leaving with other issue (see brother and sisters of President Lydon Baines Johnson, p 560), an elder son, LYNDON BAINES JOHNSON 36 President of the United States of America Married at San Antonio, Texas 17 Nov 1934, Claudia Alta (called Lady Bird) (b at Karnack, Texas 22 Dec 1912 (LBJ Ranch, Stonewall, Texas 78761, USA), dau of Thomas Jefferson Taylor, by his wife Minnnie Pattillo, and had issue The brother and sisters of Lyndon Baines Johnson 1.
