Hi Ingrid - I think your George Johnston was my grandfather's first cousin. My grandfather William Johnston's father was Richard Johnston of Palmerston, Ont. My great-grandfather Richard had an older sister Margaret Jane Johnston and an older brother, Robert H. Johnston. Robert married Mary Ann Johnson, dau. of George and Sophia Johnson. Robert and his wife Mary Ann had 4 children that I am aware of: William John Johnston, born ca. 1869; George Johnston, born ca. 1871; Richard Henry(?) Johnston, born ca. 1874, and Annie Johnston, born ca. 1878.
My George's birth year of 1871 matches your George pretty closely, and his parent's names are a match with your George's parents. I note that the witness on your George's marriage record is Annie Johnston, and my George had a sister Annie Johnston.
Both my grandfather William and great-grandfather Richard worked for the GTR (Grand Trunk Railway) in Palmerston, like your George. I'm sure that your George is the same family.
Robert, Margaret and Richard were the children of John Johnston and Mary Ann Rogers. John was born in Fermanagh County in Ireland around 1818 and emigrated to Canada about 1840 with his brother Robert and his parents Richard and Christina Johnston.
I note that the records you have for George show that he comes from an Irish background and this is consistent with him being related to my family.
As far as George's father Robert is concerned, I corresponded with a Jan Johnston of Iowa some 8 or 9 years ago. She is a great-granddaughter (or perhaps gr-gr-grandaughter of Robert. It appears Robert emigrated from Palmerston to Iowa perhaps around the 1890's. I have the e-mail correspondence with all this info on my work computer and will retrieve it. Jan did send me what she believed was a picture of Robert. I have several pictures of Richard, my great grandfather. I can e-mail these to you if you like. Do you have any of George? I wonder if there might be any family resemblence.
