Karbowiak Ohio possibly Berlin area

Karbowiak family in my lineage are from Toledo. Am trying to trace them back to Poland/Germany. It is said in my great-grandfathers obit that he was born in Berlin but I know that he was not born in the city of Berlin. Family legend says he could walk into Berlin from his town. I do not know what the town is. I am looking for any info on this name
