Two sons came to St. Louis, Mo, and three went to South America, according to Fred Luman. "Virgil Kaser's grandparents lived near a small river town, Natchez, Ill." She left a drawer full of neatly organized, typed accounts of her many trips abroad, and also research papers she had presented to her study group, late in life. She also wrote musings on Scripture, and read the Bible through each year. My mother, being a natural teacher, taught me until I was ready for the 8th grade. We lived so far from both country schools, she thought they were too far for winter walking. So I attended a little red brick country school only one term, my 8th grade. But we did have a good teacher. Dad loaned me his good saddle horse, Rob-- such a safe, kind horse, and I rode a side saddle, so with plenty of blankets I made it without any accidents. The next years I attended Pike College in Bowling Green, MO. Then my mother went for 2 winters to Silver City, NM, hoping to get rid of a dreadful bronchial cough, and she took me with her. I attended high school there. The year before we went there, I had attended William Woods College in Fulton, MO, an excellent girls' school. During the last winter we spent in NM, my Dad spent a few weeks with us and met a man, Mr. Fred Kaser, from Kirksville, MO, and his son, Virgil. As a walked down town one day, I met Dad and a sharp looking young man to whom Dad introduced me. So our meeting was very orthodox. Virgil very soon began to talk of marriage. I told him, while on one of our horse back rides, that there were 3 things I was determined to do before I would consider that fateful step, 1. I must be 21 years old, 2. I must finish school and 3., I had to have a good-looking man. He agreed to all these musts, so when fall came around in 1914 returned to William Woods College. My major, of course, was piano. On October 21, 1914 we were married in my old home with my parents and 3 cousins as guests. The cousins had a car, something very scarce then, and after we had said the fateful words the cousins drove us to Louisiana, MO, where we took the train to Chicago, IL where we spent our honeymoon. Then we arrived at our small post office town, Baring, MO, where we spent a month in a brand new hotel, while redid our house on the Kaser farm for occupancy of our first 13 years of life there. This house was a large, two story one, heated by 2 big wood burning stoves and a wood burner in the kitchen. In the course of time, we had 2 children. K. B. named for her grandmothers, and Gene Carson. Our life on the Baring Farm was not remarkable. I was used to farm life, and got used, in time to 2 children. Virgil had a big Cadillac car which had a long rest each winter for a paved road was only one to be read about, then. For sometimes a farm wagon or horseback were the only means of transportation for weeks. [Helen Jo said they used to take baby K. out in the car to get her to go to sleep]. My mother, who lived with us for 13 years after Dad's death, completed our family. Our close friends were Mr. and Mrs Charles Brosius. Virgil and Charles had a summer cottage built on a railroad water lake nearby, and it is still in our family. Our grandson, E., and his family occupy it a few days in summer, for it has been reconditioned until now it is a nice little home. Finally in 1926 Virgil tired of the long, cold winters, and we drove to Arizona, where we have been grounded for 67 years. Our children grew up, graduated from colleges and married. Our son, Gene, chose the MO farms to live and work. After 4 1/2 years in WWII he married Evelyn (Toby) Heiser, a Hannibal, MO girl, and they had 3 children, K. married an Arizona man and they have 4 children. Virgil, much to my sorrow, departed this life in 1963, and I'm so glad my daughter and 3 of her children live here. At age 99 years I am still able to push a pen, and make mistakes on my typewriter. As I push 100, maybe I'll be attending my great grandchildren's weddings More About HELEN JO UNSELL: Burial: Unknown, Greenwood Memorial Park, Phoenix, AZ11 Cause of Death: colon cancer11 Children of VIRGIL KASER and HELEN UNSELL are: 16. i.
