Hi,
Thank you for your response. Actually, I already found the Joseph G. Kiefer you mentioned. Unfortunately, when I tried to get a copy of his death certificate to try and authenticate the information, I came to a dead end (no pun intended!)I contacted Lewis county clerks, libraries, cemteries, churches, historians, funeral homes , NYS DOH, etc... all to no avail.
At this point I was hoping that some long lost relative might actually know where his grave is located. That way I could go there, and see if his parents are nearby or listed on the stone. I did extensive resarch using the online Lowville Journal and Republican, and everything seems to point to Joseph G. actually being Joseph J. Kiefer, my g-grandfather, but I was hoping for proof.
Also, I grew up with family "tales" that my Kiefer side was connected with Count LeRay du Chaumont as land agents, and they helped to settle some parts of Lewis county. I found mention of Christian Kieffer in the Lowville paper as a land agent, but am still not positive of his connection to Joseph.
Anyways, thanks again for your help. It is a relief to find someone else who thinks that Joseph G was probably Joseph J. so maybe I am on the right track.

PS: Are we related? My great grand-father was Kiefer, but my grandfather changed it to Keifer. There are so many variations in the name!
