I thought I'd better update anyone doing search in this family how the Indian connection came about. It can be found in John Austin, Sr. and Related Austins of Virginia--Southern Region. I finally have been able to prove where the story came from. One of my great-grandmother' ancestors was Judith Kendrick 1801-1870 from VA. She was the one we thought was full blood, but she has strong Eng. background. Finally a man named Dan Covington told me I'd find what I was looking for in the Austin webpages. Sure enough, there it is! Judith K. married my David Covington. Judith's father was Thomas Kendrick 1760-1833 and he was married to Lucinda Austin 1764-1887. Lucinda's father was Joseph Austin 1730-1811. His father was John Austin, Sr. married to HANNAH LOVE--full blood Saponi Indian of VA in the 1680-1760 era. They had 5 boys, all of whom courts at one time or the other declared to be Melungeon and/or 1/2 Indian. The courts also declared Hannah to be full blood. Documentation can be found on this site. So the story was told and retold thru the generations and when it finally got down to my gr. grandmother, the kids all knew not to talk about the "family secret". So, yes, some of the Kendricks do have Indian blood.
