Diane, I am also a descendant of a brother of Joseph Farmer Knipe. My mother told me she thought the general was her great-grandfather, but her aunt told me no, it was his brother. However, the name she gave me was "Elias" and I haven't been able to trace it through that name. She was elderly and may have meant Ephraim. I was told he died in an old soldiers' home in Indiana or Illinois. I have some data you might want me to share about some descendants of his, but nothing beyond "Elias" aka "Epraim".
