Tradition of name giving - Krause Family Names

Anybody have an idea of the standard "rules" applied when naming children. How did it work - especially in Prussia and Poland & Germany.

I know our tradition in South AFrica was something like this: the eldest son got the names of the paternal grandfather; eldest daugter the names of the maternal grandmother; Second eldest, maternal grandfather and so forth. But in all honestly, there are to many Krause names Carl August(us) or August(us) Carl - so I don't think this was the "rule".

Any ideas?
