To all researching Berry Brown of Greeup Ky. I found a Cherokee Citizenship Application for him...

I have an Isham Brown, in my Brown line,.. b. about 1794, who came from the Smyth co.Va. in late 1840's to Greenup/Boyd co. Ky. Isham also had lived in the Wythe/Montgomery co., Va. area is the 1820 and 30's,and there are rumors of Cherokee Indian that may have came down the Brown line. Isham Srs.,son, John Brown was born about 1820, Smyth co.,Va. He married a Matilda Jane Carter. So the Cherokee could have came down her side, if not John Brown's father, Isham Brown. My John Brown remarried to an Amanda Rucker in Boyd co.,Ky after 1870. My John Brown passed away about 1894, Boyd co.,Ky.

I dont think my John or Isham Brown Sr. tie into Berry Brown, but if anyone knows different, please let me know!

Isham is burried in the Brown cemetary , Boyd co., Ky., and lived in the Catlettsburg area. Isham and wife Christina (Hounshell)Brown had several children who also lived in the Boyd Ky area. ..if any connection would love to know. There children confirmed: John, Isham Jr., Lavisa (Brown)Wilcox, Henry, other possible children: James (may have married a Plymore?) . Joseph, Wesley, and Hiram, Richard?, William?.

Here is the information on the Berry Brown Cherokee Indian application to all interested:

AFFIDAVIT OF WITNESS.
STATE OF KENTUCKY
COUNTY OF GREENUP

Before , the undersigned, a Notary Public, in and for the county and state aforesaid, personally appeared Hosea Howe, who after being by me duly sworn states that he is 68 years of age, and a citizen of Greenup county state of Kentucky and the he is personally acquainted with Joseph A. Brown and John Brown.
Who is an applicant for citizenship in the Cherokee Nation, I.T., and affiliant futher states that the said Brown are the identical persons they represents himself to be in their application for citizenship in said Nation and that the said, ..Joseph A. Brown and John Brown are full brothers, and have been acquainted with them for about 40 years, and was acquainted with their father, Berry Brown, for about the same length of time, Said Berry Brown claimed to be one fourth Indian blood. The appplicants are both of a dark copper color, with very black hair and rather small black eyes.

(the rest of this page states that Joseph A. and John Brown, for the past 40 years and knows they are and have been recognized and treated by neighbors, acquaintances and the public generally, as a person s persons having much Indian blood, complecion, physical appearance, language, and manners of the said Browns indicate that the said Browns are of Indian blood. That from the above facts and circumstances and from statements made to me by the said Browns and their father, Berry Brown.,......dated on the 29th day of July A.D. 1893.)

another APPLICATION OF WITNESS was a John Prater, 63 years of age, a citizen of Greenup,KY., and states he is personally acquainted with Joseph A. Brown and John Brown, who is applicant for citizenship in the Cherokee Nation,I.T.. ...John Prater states that Joseph A. Brown and John Brown are full brothers, and are of a dark copper color with very black hair and rather small black eyes. He was acquainted with their father Berry Brown for about 40 years, and he showed strong indication of Indian blood., dated 29th day of July, 1893.

It appears to me that Joseph A. Brown was the one who intially filled an Cherokee Citizenship Application, and states his brother to be John Brown, and their father to be Berry Brown of Greenup co., Ky. It also appears that Joseph A. Brown listed his father, Berry Brown.
And Joseph A. Browns great grandfather to be Dale Brown.
William Brown appears on the application to be the son of Dale Brown, and the father of Berry Brown.

This may not be the whole application. The application also appears to be #2357.
