He was and is the subject of this chapter. Francois-Xavier-Antoine Labelle was born on November 24, 1834 at Ste.-Rose de Laval in Lower Canada. He was educated at the College of Ste.-Therese where he completed his classical studies. He was ordained in 1856. After serving in various parishes, he became parish priest of St.-Jerome in 1868, and retained that office until his death. In order to combat the French-Canadian emigration to the U.S., he founded 60 villages North of Montreal, and became known as the "Apostle of Colonization." A huge man, renowned for his feats of strength, Father Labelle became a legendary figure. The Father Labelle who worked actively and efficiently at the arduous task of the colonization in the region of Labelle's county, which was named after him, did much to promote settlement in this area. In 1889, the Pope crowned him an Apostolic Prothonotary. He was appointed Deputy Minister of Colonization, and Agriculture for the province in 1888 under the Mercier regime. Your relative who was estimated or famous universally died the consequences of a surgical operation on 04 January 1891. To well understand all the value of this eminent personality, we recite the words of a French tourist travelling through Canada at the time of Father Labelle: "Three things which astonished me greatly while travelling through Canada: The Niagara Falls, the faith of the people, and the Father Labelle." One of our provincial routes, on your way out by the bridge in Cartierville in the North direction carries the name of "Father Labelle Boulevard", in honour and souvenir of your relative.
