Beverly,

I don't have much information on Rhoda at this point, but I believe after careful consideration that Joseph Clarence LaBrot was the father of my great grandfather, Joseph LaChance. It's likely he was illegitmate and carried his mothers last name. I was lead to this conculsion by reviewing birth records on the Missouri State Archives website. There are three different "certificates" recorded. One clearly gives the name Joseph Clarence LaBrot. The mothers name is given as Laura Jane LaChance in two of the records and the third gives her name as Laura Jane LaPlant LaChance. You can pull up all three records by typing in the name Caruthers. LaBrot's age is noted as 23 at the time of the birth, his age in subsequent census records fits with his age at the time of Joseph LaChance's birth.
