Shelby County and Fayette County 1850-1880 census drive me nuts with their inaccuracies. It has been some time since I worked on this family but if memory serves me correct James is found with both names (James and Joeseph) in the census and his birth place varies. In 1860 he states he was born in Indiana. In all the census I find him he is living in Shelby County, IL. 1860 he is listed in Oconee, Shelby County, IL.

This is the reason I am trying to see if he is related to your John B. Lockwood.
