William and Phebe (Dingle) Lockwood of Sussex Co., Delaware and Preble Co., Ohio

On Page 337 of Holden and Lockwood’s book published 1889, is found the entry of William Lockwood (Richard<Armwell<Richard) b. 23 July 1773 in Dagsboro’ Hundred, Sussex County Del; In 1826 moved to Preble County, O., and died there in 1827; son of Richard and Margaret (Jackson) Lockwood; m., 1804, Phebe Dingle, daughter of Edward Dingle, and granddaughter of Rev. Edward Dingle. Mrs. Phebe Lockwood died in 1840. No source or documentation given. Those of you that are descendants of Richard and Margaret (Jackson) Lockwood have probably already found that this is not correct.
Samuel Lockwood (of Richard who d. 1737) made his Last Will and Testament in Sussex County Delaware on 21 Jan 1802 and it was offered for probate 12 Oct 1807 [Sx Cty DE Wills, Bk F No 6, p. 324, FHL #6620]. Among other bequests, he leaves to his “sons William and Samuel the land whereon I now live comprehending the following tracts, one called Lockwoods Adventure containing about one hundred acres…”. Samuel also bequeaths “land that I bought of George Mitchell, Esq. in partnership with Armwell Long containing about one hundred and ninety acres to my sons Benjamin Lockwood, William Lockwood and Samuel Lockwood to be divided equally between them….also my part of the sawmill…”.
On 18 May 1821 the properties mentioned in Samuel’s Will are reflected in the following two deeds. In the first one, William Lockwood and Phebe his wife of Sussex Co., Delaware sell to Armwell Long part of a tract of land called Lockwoods Discovery situated in Sussex Co., Delaware containing 42 acres [Sx Cty Deed Bk AM No 35:142, FHL #6642]. In the second one, William Lockwood of Dagsborough Hundred of Sussex Co., Delaware farmer and Phebe his wife sell to Isaiah Long their rights in a “sawmill situated at Vines Creek with its appurtenances and including the land laid out for a stockyard which formerly belonged to Samuel Lockwood late of said county deceased and Father of said William, and Armwell Long of said hundred and county and Father of said Isaiah…” [Sx Cty Deed Bk AM No 35:143, FHL #6642]. A deed of Manumission dated 30 Oct 1811 [Sx Cty Deed Book AF 29:465] from William Lockwood to Negro Hester, Isaac, and John was witnessed by John Dingle and Betsey Dingle.
The Prince George’s Church Register of Dagsboro, Sussex, Delaware [FHL #6321] contains the record of birth for five children to William Lockwood and Phebe his wife: Miara Miflin b. 17 Aug 1805 [p. 53]; Rachel Robinson b. 11 Oct 1807 [p. 56]; George Washington b. 26 Sep 1809 [p. 58]; Samuel b. 25 Mar 1811 [59]; and Daniel Dingle b. 23 Sep 1817 [p. 66].
A biographical sketch of William W. Lockwood appears in “The History of Miami County Indiana”, p. 447 which was sent to me by Angela Muething from the Miami County genweb site. In part, it says “William W. Lockwood, editor of the Peru Republican, was born in Preble County, Ohio, December 24, 1835. His father, George W. Lockwood was born in Sussex County, Delaware, in 1809, and was accidentally killed in 1837. The mother of Mr. Lockwood was Belinda Lockwood, whose maiden name was Jackson. She died in Preble County, Ohio, in 1840, having been born in that county in 1813. The paternal grandfather of our subject was William Lockwood, who was born in Delaware in 1776; emigrated to Preble County, Ohio, in 1826, and died there the following year. The grandmother of Mr. Lockwood was Phoebe (Dingle) Lockwood, born in Delaware in 1775, and died in Ohio in 1840…..The subject of this sketch is the elder of two sons and because of the early death of his parents, was reared by his kindred, and in the tenth year of his age came to Miami County with his uncle, Daniel D. Lockwood.” [Probate Case #899 Preble Co., Ohio] William 4 on 24 Dec 1839 and George Lockwood 3 on 24 Aug 1840, children and heirs of George Lockwood dec'd - Daniel Lockwood gdn. Filed 25 Sept 1840.
