Hi Melissa, The genealogy of the Mabe family line has a number of illigetimate births and inter-marriages between cousins which make the tracking of the lines confusing at best. Since I haven't tracked any other lines I cannot say whether this was normal behavior for that timeframe. The difference back then is that the county government tried to insure that the infant would not become a ward of the state by compelling the mother to come forth and name the father of the child so he could post a bond or she would have to post it herself. The bond money would be used in case the child became a ward of the county at some future date. These bonds were called 'Bastardly Bonds'. In some instances the father was named while in other cases he wasn't named and the mother/father/or other kinfolk posted the bond instead. But in most cases the mother or father was never called to post a bond. You can see examples of these types of bonds in the Court Case section of the book. I hope that this bit of information gives you some insight of the processes back then. I wish you luck in tracing your family history. Jim Mabe Notify Administrator about this message?
