Mabe Surname Origin

I have found it hard to find the name Mabe listed in many surname computer searchs. I am a descendent of William Mabe from Herefordshire, England - the one that got deported for stealing! And he didn't even take good stuff -boots, saddle, etc. Anyway,I do find puts the family origin as Scottish and mentions of the name found in places like Kudbrightshire. Does anyone have any other information or ideas - like the poor Scots came to England for work or to steal in the case of dear Papa William.
