I am a McArthur that grew up underscoring the "c" in our name. I have only heard vague reasons for the changing of the spelling of our name.....and that amounts to a decision to differentiate from the original clan MacArthur. As it has been told to me....the reasoning stemmed from the "Mac"s being widely known as being frugal with their money....and the change was made in an effort to part with that stigma. However, I do not have any personal details as to whom or when this happened. You may have more information on that than I can supply.
