Family claims descent from Ardincaple. Said to be descended from Alexander Macaulay and Jean Sempill. Interesting to note that they maintained a close connection with various Glasgow families.
Glasgow connections:
Jane Macaulay (1810-1870) m. Francis Reid (1800-1850) of Glasgow w/issue. Their son, Francis, Jr., m. his Helen Macaulay, his first cousin.
James Macaulay, Jane's brother, entered Glasgow Univ. in 1826; m. 1835 Susan Oughterson in Greenock, co. Renfrew.
Helen, sister of the above, m. James Hunter Robertson of Bagatelle, Greenock. One dau, Susan Robertson, m. Hugh Finlay of Glasgow. One son, Sir Helenus Robertson, was a cotton broker and Chairman of the Mersey Docks.
Maria Macaulay, another sister, m. 1840 Alexander Ewing, J.P. of Glasgow.
