Archibald Constable (1774-1827), the famous publisher, died after losing almost all of his wealth. In 1812 Robert Cathcart, Writer, and Robert Caddell, a clerk of Constable's, became partners upon the retirement of Alexander Gibson Hunter. Constable m. 1 a dau of David Willison, printer; m. 2 1818 Charlotte Neale. Archibald's son, Thomas (1812-1881), was appointed printer and publisher in Edinburgh to Queen Victoria. He was followed in the publishing business by his son and grandson who founded the publishing firm of T. A. Constable. Unlike Constable, Robert Caddell (1788-1849) was able to regain his wealth after purchasing the rights to all of Scott's novels. Later Caddell bought the estate of Ratho, near Edinburgh.
