John Laing Macaulay b. Scotland, c. 1832; son of a Presbyterian clergyman. Claimed to be a relation of Lord Macaulay. He went to New Orleans before the Civil War and had his brother act as his agent in Cuba for the sale of cotton. At this time he amassed a small fortune. After the war, John Laing M. moved to New Brunswick, New Jersey where he resided for about 30 years. In NYC he became a prominent cotton broker and speculator. He helped found the Cottonseed Oil Co. and was its president until 1887. For several years he also acted as a director of the New York and New England Railroad. At about this time he cornered a large amount of the railroad's stock and supposedly made a gain of about $1,000,000. He also occupied for a time a seat in the Coffee Exchange.
John's first wife, who died in Cuba, was a granddau of Patrick Henry. Sometime at around 1895 he moved to London and re-married there. His address was 53 Westburne Terrace,
London. He had one dau, Mrs Francis Parker, whose husband was a lawyer with his office at 35 William Street. John Laing Macaulay passed away in 1897 in London at the age of about 65.
