In Reply to: Macaulay from Stornoway (earlier in Gairloch & Lochbroom) by John Macrae of 1752

From:- luceo57@yahoo.co.uk John MacRae... are you a medic with whom I corresponded from Stornoway a number of years ago? If so you will have my address but if not then before I left last week to come South - despite the dreadful weather - I wandered into the cemetry to have a look at MacIvers Memorial Stone.... it states.... In Memory of Norman MacIver, Bank Agent and Shipowner, born 31st December 1814 and died 2nd April, 1879. Barbara his wife born 18th nJanuary 1813 died 8th March 1919. John MacAulay born 22nd August 1842 died 5th October 1843. John Daniel died 21st March 1852 aged 10 days. Alexander Colin born 16th December 1848 died in London 8th February 1896. Sons of above. To the Memory of Mary MacLeod eldest daughter of Norman MacIver died on 15th September 1925 aged 81 years.
,,,,,,,,, On another adjacent Stone,,,,,,,,
In Memory of MaryAnn MacIver born 3rd June 1816 Married to Alexander Macpherson , Stornoway, 15th September 1852 and died 10th January 1858. Father I will that they also whom thou hast given me be with me where I am that they may behold my glory which thou hast given me for thou lovest me before the foundation of the world.
To the Memory of John Lewis MacRae born 1868 - died 1943.
Lietenant Colonel Indian Medical Service son of Surgeon Major W MacRae, Indian Medical Service, grandson of Norman MacIver.
On another nearby stone but may well be related......
Sacred To The Memory of Norman MacIver, Shipmaster Stornoway, who died on 21st January 1851 aged 45 years this stone is erected by the surviving relatives. If the blessing of an aged mother and sorrowing sisters to whose comfort and support he so liberally contributed is due it was in the case of the deceased.
Incidentally, the Surgeon Major referred to served in the Madras Army and was the son of the local clergyman, the Revd John MacRae who was born at Redcastle and served Stornoway as its parish minister and his wife was a Julia Campbell MacDougall.
I hope this information may be of some additional or confirmational use to an enquirer. I would like to secure photographs of both the MacIvers and MacRaes if any exist and for this I shall pay. norman
