You may be interested in the following information.

JOHN MACAULAY died October 4, 1799. He married ELIZABETH BROWN 1767 in Dumbarton, daughter of JOHN BROWN and KATHERINE WARDROP. She was born February 17, 1747/48, and died 1821.

6 John 1778-1835 m 1 Janet Allison, 5 children.m2 Mary Smith had 8 children. He was the procurator fiscal for Dunbartonshire. He also had a illigitimate son called William by Catherine Brown.
7 Ann b 1780 married John Dunn Barclay 1809.Prominent Glasgow lawyer.

9 Alexander b 1786.
10 Susan b 1788 died Edinburgh 1861 unmarried.Present at death was Henry Hawker Arnaud her nephew.
11 James Wardrop b June 16th 1792.
As can be seen there is a McAulay Dixon connection through the marriage of Katherine Ann and Jacob Dixon however there is possibly another link.
John Brown McAulay 1810-1870 eldest son of John McAulay (6) married in 1836 Jane Dixon daughter of Jacob Dixon and Jean Brown. Could Jean be the woman from a 'lesser class'? This line could still be in existance. The outline of the Dixon family squabble in a recent posting could account for the reduced social status of this branch.
