I have been searching for Mahala as well. My ggg-grandmother's name was Julia Mahala Whitby. She was from Caroline County/Queen Ann's County MD. I was thinking that Mahala could be her mother's maiden name, but unfortunately I have no idea what her parents names are at this point. Does anyone have anymore information about the meaning or origin of the name? It seems from looking on this forum that most people had it as a given name and not a surname. I looked up the name in the Social Security Death Index, and there were a good amount of people with the last name of Mahala from Cecil County, MD.
