Thompson Simmons was first married to a distant relative of mine, Katherine Murnahan. Here is what I have found on him:

Thompson Simmons b. Nov. 19, 1802 Va.; d. Jan. 22, 1888 Iowa Co., Iowa. Son of Joel Simmons, Sr. and Jane/Jenny Thompson.

Marriage 1: Katherine Murnahan b. 1804-1810; d. 1824-1829. Daughter of Edward Murnahan and Mary Clark.

Marriage 2: Elizabeth Mannon b. abt. 1806 Va.; d. 1860-1870 Iowa Co., Iowa. Daughter of Boaz Mannon and Judah unknown.

* Not once seen any documents listing Thompson Simmons as "Mankin." He has a son that he names Mankin, though.

1823 -- Apr. 1, Thompson received a land patent in Rush Co., Indiana for 40 acres in 13/18/9. He is listed as "of Lawrence Co., Ohio."

1824 -- Mar. 18, Don't believe he moved to Indiana until after his marriage to Katherine (Murnahan) in Lawrence Co., Ohio.

1824 - 1829 -- Katherine died. Don't know if she had any children or not. According to Thompson's 1830 census, he had no children. If you look at his 1840 census, he has a male b. 1825-1830 and a female b. 1825-1830. If he married Elizabeth Mannon in Nov. 1829, these 2 children may have belonged to first wife, Katherine Murnahan. However, if Thompson's brother, Joel and wife Nancy (Mannen) Simmons died in Henry Co., Indiana, in the 1830's, then Thompson may have taken on his nieces and nephews?

1829 -- Nov. 8, Thompson Simmons married Elizabeth Mannon in Champaign Co., OH

1830 -- Rush Co., Indiana census listed as Thompson Simmons with the bodycount of males = 1 age 20-30 / females = 1 age 20-30 (a couple of houses away is Joel Simmons - Joel is listed in Lawrence Co., Ohio for 1820 and Joel Jr. has an early marriage records for 1822 in Lawrence Co., OH)

1837 -- Mar. 20, Thompson receives a land patent for 46.92 acres in Henry Co., Indiana in 19/18/10 (near Joel's pieces from 1834)

1840 -- Henry Co., Indiana census listed as Symmons, Thompson with the bodycount of males = 2 age < 5, 2 age 5-10, 1 age 10-15, 1 age 30-40 / females = 1 age < 5, 1 age 5-10, 1 age 10-15, 1 age 30-40. Note 2 children ages 10-15 might be Katherine's, but are probably nieces and nephews from brother Joel? I have seen online info stating that Thompson's brother Joel, and his wife, Nancy (Mannon) both died in the 1830's. If so, Andrew J. is definitely one of these tickmarks above.

1848 -- Mar. 18, Lawrence Co., Ohio deed for Thompson Simmons and wife Elizabeth "of Rush Co., Indiana" sell 80 acres in 13-2-16 to Daniel Beller for $20, as part of their claim to the lands of Boaz and Juda Mannon. DB 15, p. 32.

1849 -- Apr. 10, Thompson receives land patent for 80 acres in Tippecanoe Co., Indiana. He is "of Rush Co., Indiana."

1850 -- Jan. 1, Thompson receives land patent for 61.07 acres in 7/24/5 (W1/2, SW1/4) Howard Co., Indiana. Andrew J. enters land that neighbors this and his earlier piece on the same day. Andrew J.'s pieces are listed as: 8/24/5 (SE1/4, SW1/4) and 80 acres from May 1, 1849 in 17/24/5.

1850 -- Howard Co., Indiana census listed as Simmons, Thompson - 5? Va , Elizabeth - 44 Va, Rebecca - 19 (all others b. Ind.), David - 16, Jordan - 14, Thomas - 12, Margaret - 10, Martin - 8, Charley - 4, James - 19. There are only 3 families of Simmons in this county, one is an Andrew J. Simmons b. 1824, that goes to Iowa with Thompson's family and a John Simmons b. 1827. James is probably another nephew from Joel and Nancy (Mannon) Simmons?

1856 -- North English P.O., Fillmore twp, Iowa Co., Iowa census listed as Simmonds, Thompson - 55 Va, resided 2 years in this state, Elizabeth - 54 Tenn, Jourdan - 19 (all kids b. Ind.), Thomas - 17, Margaret - 16, Mankin - 14, Charles - 12. (son David lives beside him.)

1860 -- Fillmore twp, Iowa Co., Iowa census listed as Simonds, Thompson - 50 Va, Elizabeth - 55 Germany, Mankin - 17 Ind, Charles - 14 Ind, Emily - 14 Ind (Emily is the daughter of Andrew J. Simmons, who is living in nearby Keokuk Co., Iowa, right beside of Thompson's son Thomas.) David Simmons lives beside his dad, Thompson.

1870 -- Fillmore twp., Iowa Co., Iowa census has Thomas Simmons age 69 Ind, with his sons' families living around him: David Summons, Markin Semmons, and Chas Semmons.

1870 -- Fillmore twp, Iowa Co., Iowa tax list listed David, Thompson, Mankin, and Charles (the latter 2 were just renters). Thompson had 1 horse, 1 milch cow, 3 other cattle, all worth $90, 100 bushels spring wheat.

1880 -- Fillmore twp, Iowa Co., Iowa census listed as M. Simons - 38 Ind Va Va, Martha J. - 32 Wis Ind Ind, Espy - 12 Iowa Wis Ind, Thompson - 77 Va - -.

1885 -- Fillmore twp, Iowa Co., Iowa census listed as M. Simons - 42 Ind, Martha J. - 41 Wis., James E. - 16, Thompson - 83 Va. (wid.), Ada Ingram - 15

1888 -- Iowa Co., Iowa early death record for Thompson.
