Marcantel family - S. Louisiana

My husband's grandfather is named Mercantel, a French-speaking Cajun from Louisiana (therefore his family originally came here from French Acadia in Canada - he speaks fluent French and his mother spoke no English at all). He was actually born Marcantel, but he didn't have a birth certificate and when he needed a letter to prove that he was 18 so he could join the Merchant Marine, the parish priest spelled it wrong, so that became the official spelling (though his sisters and brothers are all named Marcantel).

I don't know when or where the Mathew you're looking for was born or died, but my husband says that at least part of the family lineage has been traced back to Pistoia, Italy. My mother-in-law knows a lot more about this (including names and dates of a lot of the family members, which might at least give you something to work with), so you might want to check with her: ncolby@acadian.net

Good luck!
