Howard — I was at the library today collecting an interlibrary loan hoping to find data about Mary J's mother-in-law, Bridget Berry Kingsley (see the Kingsley board). But the genealogical librarian was taking a late lunch, so I went to the stacks for an hour. I found a book about the first 100 years of the Census. I found that in the 1790 census, there were 176 Mathewson (or spelling variants) families, with over 1000 members. My, you have your work cut out for you!!
