Philip McArdle (born about 1842)emmigrated from Ireland to Ohio (date unknown). He left America stating that he didn't like the way African Americans were treated. He then went to Consett where he worked in the steel industry. Following an industrial accident in which he lost a leg he went to live in Sunderland with his family and sold furniture.
Philip had gone to America with other members of his family. His sister, Maggie, stayed there. It is not known if others left the USA with him. He may have had other siblings in Consett. Philip's eldest daughter went to Ohio as a teenager but was killed in a fire.
Records for Consett (such as census) are often listed under Lanchester, Co Durham as that is the older town.
