Try the 1850 census for Talladega Co., AL. Your John (I think) is listed as 11 years old on the census with Samuel and Nancy. My grandfather's name was John Thomas McConathy also. A different one, of course. Many years ago, my father brought my grandfather and grandmother to a reunion of McConathys in LA. I don't think they ever learned what the connection was between the TX group and the LA group. Since then, I started my research and found out. Be sure you prove what you find on the site. He is pretty good about the LA group because he is one of them. But He has some mistakes on the TX one. Let me know if the 1850 census solves your problem.
