Hi; I am a Stephens researcher trying to find my connection with the McElwaney family of Fayette Co., GA. Christine Kelly (a longtime Stephens research) has stated the the McElwaney family is "of the McIlwain family in South Carolina", she was referring to Lancaster Co. However from my review of this family both mother and father were born in North Carolina and the mother's name is Phereby. She appears in 1850 census with son John, lives close but not real near to Owen Leroy McElwaney. I am pretty sure this is Mom. Now the Mackilwaine family in North Carolina is headed by James Mackilwaine (information obtained from family tree on Ancestry.com)and his descendants are not complete enough on the prepared studies. I am sure that the Fayette County McElwaney is family is from a son or grandson of James Mackilwaine. If anyone is working on this family, please contact me, I have some information on this family, but it was collected from Ancestry.com family trees (so it is unreliable). I have confirmed the families through census study. In any event I need help with this family, it is hard to study with all the different name variations.
