James Edward McKay of Pennsylvania and New York
Posted by: M. M. Myers (ID *****9165) Date: December 28, 2004 at 17:30:51
  of 2654

I am looking for information about James Edward McKay. He was born in New York City in 1847 (some records state 1843)and while he was very young (about five) his parents passed away. His sister was sent "out west" and he was sent to live with relatives in Rhode Island.

In 1862, at age 14, he enlisted in the 163rd New York Vol. Infantry. He told enlistment officers that he was 18 so that he could get into the military, which is the reason for some records saying that he was born in 43'. He was wounded in the battle of Fredericksburg in the right leg, and because of the wound he spent the rest of the war in hospitals. He was discharged in 1865.

He ended up in Shamokin, PA where he started a family. He made a living as a coal miner and he died in 1900.

Because of him being so young when his parents died, it is unknown what his parents name's were.

If you are related, think you are, or have information PLEASE contact me. I have more information about him, and Iam always looking for more information - especially about his parents and or sister.

Thank you in advance.
