I have long been curious about the ages assigned to the children of Robert McKay the elder, the grantee, and his reported wives, Ann Brown, and the others known only by their first names, Mary and Margaret. One of the leading researchers gives ages of birth for his children that seem not to be the norm given their ages at marriage which also leads me to a puzzle about the wives and which of his children belonged to each. I note that is has also been stated that we don't know their births. But it seems to me that most were likely Here is what has been often posted Mary, born: ca. 1705; died: ca. 1797; Robert, born: ca. 1708; died: before 20 Sep 1796; Margaret, born: ca. 1710; died: ca. 1770 James, born: ca. 1700 [I assume this birth was a typographical error] died: 1797; Zachariah, born: ca. 1714; died: ca. 1797 Hannah, born: ca. 1715; died: ca. 1755; Leah, born: ca. 1716; died: 1797; Elizabeth, born: ca. 1719; died: ca. 1790; Moses, born: ca. 1720; died: 1777; VA; Hannah McKay married George Hollingsworth on 12-19-1734. This makes her 19. Mary Mackay & George Robinson dated 14 Feb 1726 Her certificate was signed by her mother Mary. that makes her 21 years old at marriage by thislist. Margaret Mackay & Joshua Job dated 1 Nov 1731. This makes her 21 Her mother was Margaret. Robert m. 27 Jan. 1735, Patience Job That makes him 30 given the 1705 and 31 when his oldest child was born James McKay. Although his marriage date has not been found, the ages of his first two children make him 48 and 50 when his first two children were born. Women on the frontier more typically married at 16 to 18, sometimes younger. Men were more usually 18 to 21. This seems like rather unusual marriage pattern. At 16 to 18, we end up with Mary born 1708 to 1710, Margaret at 1713 to 1715 and Hannah at 1716-1718. In any case, if Mary McKay was the oldest daughter and her mother was Mary, how can Ann Brown have been the mother of most of the children as is usually stated?
